Karen DeGuire - Laser-Cut Wood Mandalas
I am a creative soul. It’s the air I breathe. I am always looking for new ways to create. I was traditionally an oil painter until I discovered a maker space in town that offered all kinds of new technology. The laser cutters presented an amazing opportunity to use materials I hadn’t explored before. I create my designs on the computer and the laser cuts each layer out of hand painted birch. I began with functional trivets. My wall mandalas evolved out of those. Each mandala consists of multiple layers. I carefully glue the layers together to make beautiful one of a kind pieces of artwork. I seal them to protect the wood. My influence for these designs are rooted in sacred geometry, nature, and architecture. Everywhere I go, I see a mandala design in the making. I believe the ability for my mind to organize shapes and colors into universally pleasing motifs is one of my greatest strengths and I enjoy sharing it with others.
Laura Lebeda - Charcoal and Pastel, Clay Mixed Media Sculpture
My intention is to invite viewers to look closer and see the sacred in our everyday lives.
The purpose of my artwork is to encourage further exploration and contemplation of the strength, fragility and beauty of the natural world, and our human relationship within it.
Jodie Maurer - Plein Air Oil
Jodie Maurer captures the beauty and movement of the land in her gestural, thick, oil paintings. Raised in Overland Park, KS, she moved to St. Louis, MO to study art in 2005. Maurer received a B.A. in Studio Art in 2011 from Principia College, Elsah, IL. Maurer participates in Plein Air competitions across the country and has a body of work including landscapes from the Southwest, Midwest, and Northeast. Most recently she’s started painting on the West coast near her new home in southern California. Plein Air painting is an incredible experience. It’s a very intuitive process as the lighting and other elements change while working to capture the surrounding beauty. It’s an in-the-moment response to the qualities of the Soul found in nature. Maurer sees so much of God’s love expressed in nature and hopes the audience feels God’s love when admiring her paintings. She shows in Beacon Art Gallery in Stone Harbor, NJ, and Academy Art and Frame in Colorado Springs, CO. Her paintings are in several private collections.
Anthony Scheffler - Wood Working
“My intent and challenge is to create unique, contemporary forms which evoke a personal and consequential response.” Anthony Scheffler
While in high school Anthony Scheffler would escape the orchestration of his prescriptive suburban community, and bicycle for miles along the New Orleans lakefront and then south toward the river, passing through rows of shotgun homes before arriving at dawn in the French Quarter. It was a fascination with the character of “the quarters” and how it was continually translated by the smells, sounds, and shadows of this architecturally unique space that drew him back so often and eventually resulted in his exploration, through art, of the power and appeal of simple shapes. In 2008, Scheffler began showing his work, which includes open and closed vessels, teapots and wall sculptures. Several of his pieces are in private and corporate collections, including the Fleur Bresler Collection and the permanent collection of The Kamm Teapot Foundation. Although known for his unique, slab built wooden teapots, Scheffler’s wall hangings best reflect his fascination with and ongoing exploration of simple, and more recently, complex intersections, which he considers the “roux” of compelling design. Although he holds a number of degrees, as an artist Scheffler is largely self-taught, having benefited throughout his life from observations of, and associations with, accomplished artisans. He now divides his time between the university and his studio in the Soulard district of St Louis, finding purpose as an educator and expression as an artist-maker. He returns to New Orleans often and remains an avid bicyclist.
