My work in painting and sculpture focuses on the use of color and form to see things that only exist in the artwork I create. I am strongly influenced by sources in nature and that is a starting reference of the work. The colors of flowers and forest vegetation peak my imagination. Rocks, mountains and waterfalls are forms that will move me to paint or to carve stone. The movement and shapes of animals and birds are repeated in my work. Climate change and the sustainable use of our planet are themes that reflect a viewpoint that mainly come across in some of my titles. While I believe the arts and culture are a serious endeavor I also enjoy expressing my humorus side.

I work in many mediums and am currently exploring the use of shaped canvases and upcycled and recycled materials. I use many types of stone for mu carvings including Missouri limestone. Using local stone, I mostly work in direct carving and surprise even myself with the finished sculpture sometimes. My paintings on mirrors explore other dimensions and depths that flat canvas cannot. When painting on found objects and broken clocks I explore concepts about the before, the present and the future. My art can be both existential and playful at the same time.

Working with thick impasto of paint I explore blends and half blends of colors using a carved balsa wood stick like other artists use a palette knife. I like unusual and unexpected color combinations and knife work that reminds me of fireworks going off or quiet places I enjoy visiting again and again. The paint itself forms surfaces that bring to mind moving water over rocks or breezes moving flowers in the garden. My new work is a logical continuation of previous studies that I hope gives a sense of visual and intellectual wonder to all that see them.
