Acrylic Alcohol Resist Technique Workshop With Gary Lang

Alcohol resist technique is usually used for small paper works, but it can be used in acrylic painting on canvas as well.  It can create interesting layers of colors, and shapes to be used as is, or as an underpainting or background surface. The resist makes an unstable surface, so it is important to use a clear acrylic medium, or varnish on finished works. When working with layers of colors, it may be useful to coat some layers with clear acrylic as well.

Workshop Agenda: Two sessions

In each session we will be layering a base color using flat acrylic brushes, then adding different a watered-down acrylic layer (mixed to the right consistency) over the base color and immediately spatter alcohol over the watered-down layer to begin the resist.  Drying time is needed between adding layers and more thin layers of color may be applied for different effects. The workshop is broken into two sessions to allow for drying times. We may break for lunch as paint dries between layers as well.

Abstraction is my choice as a composition, but you may wish to use images in your own work. We will be trying analogous, complementary, and tonal ideas for our color palates. Different effects are achieved with dark colors resisted over light colors verses the effect of light colors over dark colors.
